Provine scholars "Read Across the District"

The National Education Association began the Read Across America initiative in 1998. It is the nation’s largest celebration of reading. This year-round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources that are about everyone, for everyone.

The program focuses on motivating students to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources that are about everyone, for everyone. Its goal is to include books that students can see themselves reflected in and books that allow readers to see a world or a character that might be different from them.

While Read Across America is traditionally celebrated in the first week of March, it is intended to be a year-long event.

In honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2, “Read Across America Week” encourages children across the country to read books and celebrate reading, no matter where they may be. Although "Read Across America" celebrations are more commonly associated with elementary school students than high school students, they can cater to any age group and generate enthusiasm for reading long after the festivities.

Motivating children to read is essential to student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers. Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school. Provine scholars enjoyed spending time with our future “Baby Rams” and look forward to returning next year.
