International Baccalaureate Program

  • The International Baccalaureate® Program (IB) is an interdisciplinary program of international education designed to foster the development of the whole child. It is designed to help students develop the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills necessary to participate actively and responsibly in a changing world. The general objectives of the IB program are to provide students with a balanced education; to facilitate geographic and cultural mobility; to promote international understanding through shared academic experiences.

The Middle Years Program (MYP) is designed for students aged 11 to 16. This period, encompassing early puberty and mid-adolescence, is a particularly critical phase of personal and intellectual development and requires a program that helps students participate actively and responsibly in a changing and increasingly interrelated world. Learning how to learn and how to evaluate information critically is as important as learning facts.

As part of the IB, Northwest’s teachers are facilitators of learning who engage with and encourage students to question, to reflect and to take action on their learning—with a focus on service to others.

Students who participate in the MYP:

    • Learn to think independently and to drive their own learning; they become experts at self-managing themselves, their schoolwork and their time.
    • Develop critical thinking and communication skills, confidence, social savvy and other attributes and talents needed to succeed at Northwest and beyond.
    • Become more culturally aware through the development of a second language.
    • Are more able to engage and collaborate with diverse individuals in an increasingly globalized, rapidly changing world.
